September 2018 Prayer Partner Message

Dear friends,

About ten years ago, my colleague Matthew Soerens and I began work on a book called Welcoming the Stranger: Justice, Compassion and Truth in the Immigration Debate, that we hoped and prayed God might use to help evangelical Christians throughout the U.S. to think in biblically-informed, fact-based ways about the topic of immigration and—even more importantly—about immigrants themselves.

Much has changed in a decade, both in terms of immigration policy and in the ways that local churches are responding to immigration issues, so we’ve recently released a new, thoroughly updated version of the book in partnership with InterVarsity Press. It’s now available as a print book, an e-book or as an audiobook from various booksellers.

We’ve also prepared a companion small-group curriculum, which you’re able to download for free at www.WelcomingTheStranger.com. The six-session guide focuses on immigration and refugees from the perspective of the Bible, complete with short video clips, readings, prayer guidance and experiential learning activities.

Our ultimate prayer with these resources is that they would help Christians, who profess that the Bible is their top authority for viewing any difficult issue, to approach the complex and controversial topic of immigration first and foremost from the perspective of the Bible. We’ve made it our mission to change a statistic from a 2015 LifeWay Research poll that found that just 12% of American evangelicals say the Bible is the primary influence on how they think about immigration. Especially at a time when we’ve seen families divided by changes to immigration policy, we believe it’s as important as ever that the church engage this issue in biblical ways.

Hace cerca de diez años mi colega Matthew Soerens y yo comenzamos a trabajar en un libro titulado Welcoming the Stranger: Justice, Compassion and Truth in the Immigration Debate (Dando la bienvenida al extranjero: compasión y verdad en el debate sobre inmigración)con el que esperábamos y orábamos para que Dios lo usara ayudando a los cristianos evangélicos a lo largo de los Estados Unidos a reflexionar bíblicamente informados y basados en hechos sobre el tópico de la inmigración y, mucho más importante, sobre los inmigrantes en sí mismos.

Mucho ha cambiado en una década, tanto en términos de las políticas de inmigración como en las formas en las que la iglesias locales están respondiendo a los asuntos relacionados con este tema. Es por esto que hemos lanzado hace poco una nueva versión de este libro, profundamente revisada y actualizada, con InterVarsity Press, que se encuentra disponible en forma impresa, libro electrónico (e-book) y audiolibro en las principales tiendas de libros.

También hemos preparado un currículo para pequeños grupos que se puede obtener gratuitamente del sitio www.WelcomingTheStranger.com. Nuestra final y más importante oración es para que estos recursos ayuden a los Cristianos, quienes profesan que la Biblia es la máxima Autoridad para revisar cualquier asunto difícil, a abordar el complejo y controvertido tema de la inmigración ante todo desde la perspectiva de la Biblia. Hemos hecho de esta nuestra misión para cambiar la estadística realizada por LifeWay Research en 2015 que encontró que apenas el 12 por ciento de los americanos evangélicos afirman que la Biblia es su primera influencia sobre cómo piensan el tema de la inmigración. Especialmente en tiempos en los que vemos familias separadas por los cambios  en las políticas de inmigración, creemos que como nunca antes es importante que la iglesia se comprometa con este asunto desde una visión bíblica.
