February 2018 Prayer Partner Message

 In Prayer Partner

Dear prayer partners,

Yesterday, at a press conference on Capitol Hill, Senator Angus King of Maine made a request: “If there was ever a time for prayer, it’s the next twenty-four hours.”

As the deadline for expiration of the DACA program quickly approaches, Members of Congress are trying to reach a consensus that would allow Dreamers who came to the country as children to stay lawfully in the country and continue to contribute. But they need our prayers.

Issues of immigration matter to us because they matter to God. As Senator James Lankford of Oklahoma—a former Southern Baptist minister—observed at the same press conference yesterday: “Each individual is made in the image of God. Each individual has value and worth.” (You can watch all of yesterday’s press conference here).

The press conference was held to announce the launch of a letter to Members of Congress and the President published in the Washington Post, pledging our prayers and urging quick action on behalf of Dreamers, refugees (including many persecuted Christians), and immigrant families seeking reunification. The letter has been signed by more than 2,000 people, including local pastors from all 50 states and national leaders such as Beth Moore, Max Lucado, Bill and Lynne Hybels, Matthew Chandler, and Ann Voskamp, in addition to leaders from the Evangelical Immigration Table.

We delivered initial copies of the letter to Members of Congress yesterday, but we want to return with even more signatures. Would you consider signing on—and ask your pastor to consider doing so as well?
Most importantly, please do not just sign a letter promising to pray for our elected officials—let’s take Senator King up on his request and make sure that we actually do so, praying that God would give each Member of Congress and the President wisdom and courage as they seek compassionate, common sense solutions for vulnerable immigrants.

In Christ,
Matthew Soerens
National Coordinator, Evangelical Immigration Table
U.S. Director of Church Mobilization, World Relief
