July 2017 Prayer Partner Message

 In Prayer Partner

Dear prayer partners,

This month, we at the Evangelical Immigration Table invite you to join us in praying for another principle for immigration reform: Respect for the rule of law.

When discussing the rule of law, most Christians begin with Romans 13, where we read “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities.” Paul’s teaching reminds us that government was instituted by God as a means to help people living together according to His design. This means that rulers are responsible for establishing just laws, which includes the procedures for immigrating from one country to another, whether for work or other purposes. In establishing just immigration rules, our leaders should recognize the God-given dignity of every human being and the mutual benefits that flow from showing hospitality to newcomers.

Furthermore, immigrants are responsible to follow the rules established by the country to which they seek to immigrate. For much of our nation’s history, our immigration laws and policies were relatively straightforward and easy to follow. This was a win/win solution. It offered opportunities to those seeking the American dream and fueled our nation’s prosperity.

Sadly, our current immigration laws are out of sync with the needs of our labor market and often harmful to the God-ordained structure of the family. A biblically appropriate respect for the rule of law should guide us to reform a system that is not currently functioning well, restoring the authority of the rule of law while also respecting the human dignity of each person made in God’s image.

In the words of Paul Louis Metzger, Professor of Christian Theology & Theology of Culture at Multnomah Biblical Seminary, “In the end, Christians have a responsibility in our democratic society to promote and live by laws that promote God’s law of love of neighbor — documented or not, as disclosed in Scripture and embodied in Jesus Christ.”

This month, we pray for fair and effective immigration laws that uphold the dignity of the human person and respect the rule of law along with the authority of our elected and appointed leaders.

Join us in praying for:

  • Christians to remember God’s command to love foreigners as themselves (Lev. 19:18, 33-34) as they practice their democratic right to vote this year in local, state and federal elections.
  • Those seeking asylum and refugee status to receive a fair hearing before the courts (Deut. 1:16-17; 24:17-18; 27:19).
  • Politicians, judges and law enforcement officers to create laws and enforce the rule of law in a way that honors God’s heart for immigrants (Deut. 10:17-19; 24:14-15).
