December 2017 Prayer Partner Message

Dear prayer partners,

As you’re likely aware, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was terminated back in September. Some of the approximately 700,000 young people whose authorization to work is dependent on that program have already lost their status, and many more will do so in the months to come. Without congressional action, many will lose their jobs and could even face deportation.

It seems like almost everyone (including a broad range of evangelical leaders, most evangelical Christians, business leaders, police chiefs and sheriffs, many Congressional Republicans and Democrats, 83% of Americans overall, and even the president) agrees that something should be done so that these “Dreamers” can continue to live in the country that they consider their home, to keep their jobs and continue to be allowed to contribute, provide for their families, and pay taxes.

But passive support for a solution will likely not make it happen. As Christians, we are called to demonstrate our love for our neighbors “with actions and in truth” (1 John 3:18). “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due,” we are instructed, “when it is in your power to act” (Proverbs 3:27).

As Congress considers whether or not to pursue a legislative solution for Dreamers, it is in your power to act, and we want to challenge you to do so. You can accept the #PowerToAct Challenge by taking three simple steps:

1. Call. Visit PowerToAct.org and complete a simple form, then we’ll determine the Members of Congress who represent your zip code and you’ll immediately receive a phone call connecting you to their office. Simply leave a message stating that you want to encourage the Member of Congress to use their power to act on behalf of a permanent solution for Dreamers.
2. Video. Make a short video with your smartphone, explaining why you took this action—whether because of biblical teaching, to stand with a particular Dreamer you know personally, because of the economic impact on your community, or any other reason
3. Challenge. Upload your video to a social media platform such as Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram, using the hashtag #PowerToAct, tagging the three specific individuals you want to challenge, and including a link to PowerToAct.org.

One last step, but perhaps the most important: the Bible tells us that, while we may seek influence from political leaders, ultimately “it is from the Lord that one gets justice” (Proverbs 29:26). Please commit to praying for our elected officials in the coming days, that God would bring forth a just solution for those—including many brothers and sisters in Christ—who will be directly harmed if Congress fails to act.

Como seguramente usted ya sabe, el programa de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia, DACA (por sus siglas en inglés) terminó el pasado septiembre. Algunos de los aproximadamente 700 mil jóvenes cuya autorización para trabajar dependía de ese programa ya han perdido su estatus, y muchos más lo harán en los próximos meses.  Sin una decisión del Congreso, muchos perderán sus trabajos y podrán incluso, ser deportados.

Parece que casi todos (incluyendo un amplio espectro de líderes evangélicos, la mayoría de los cristianos evangélicos, los líderes empresariales, policías y alguaciles, muchos republicanos y demócratas en el Congreso, el 83 por ciento de los americanos, e incluso el Presidente) están de acuerdo que debe hacerse algo para que estos “Dreamers” (soñadores) puedan seguir viviendo en el país que ellos consideran su hogar, puedan conservar sus trabajos y continúen aportando al bienestar de sus familias y pagando sus impuestos.

Pero un apoyo pasivo no es el que va a lograr que esto suceda. Como cristianos, estamos llamados a demostrar nuestro amor por nuestros vecinos “de hecho y en verdad” (1 Juan 3:18). “No niegues el bien a quien se le debe” ‑se nos instruye— “cuando esté en tu mano el hacerlo” (Proverbios 3:27).

En tanto el Congreso considera ofrecer o negar una solución legislativa para los soñadores, está en su poder actuar, y nosotros los invitamos a hacerlo. Usted puede aceptar el reto #PowerToAct siguiendo estos tres simples pasos:

1. Acceda a la página www.PowerToAct.org y complete un sencillo cuestionario. Nosotros determinaremos cuál es el miembro del Congreso que lo representa a usted de acuerdo a su código postal y seguidamente usted recibirá una llamada telefónica que lo conectará directamente con la oficina de su Representante. Simplemente déjele un mensaje haciéndole saber que usted lo anima a usar su poder de actuación a favor de una solución permanente para los soñadores.
2. Elabore un corto video con su teléfono, explicando por qué usted decidió actuar –ya sea por la enseñanza bíblica, por apoyar a un soñador que usted conoce personalmente, por el impacto económico que esta situación representa para su comunidad, o por cualquier otra razón—.
3. Suba su video a cualquier plataforma de redes sociales tales como Twitter, Facebook o Instagram usando el hashtag #PowerToAct, coloque etiquetas a tres personas específicas a las que usted quiere animar a actuar, e incluya el vínculo a www.PowerToAct.org.

Un último paso, quizá el más importante: la Biblia nos dice que, mientras esperamos que los líderes políticos ejerzan su influencia, en última instancia, “es del  Señor de donde viene la justicia para el hombre” (Proverbios 29:26). Por favor, en los próximos días acometa la tarea de orar por nuestros funcionarios electos, para que Dios pueda adelantar una solución justa para aquellos que se verán directamente afectados por la falta de acción del Congreso, incluyendo a muchos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo.
